Eduardo Kobra

The studio's biography is the source most other accounts copy, and it is candid. Kobra started on the walls of Campo Limpo and Jardim Martinica as a pichador in his teens and collected school warnings for unauthorised interventions. In the 1990s he painted posters, toy scenery and decorative images for what was then Brazil's largest amusement park, the first time he was paid for pictures, and the work brought commissions from other companies and advertising agencies. The architecture journal Vitruvius, writing in January 2013, dated the start of his wall work to about 1987 and the founding of Studio Kobra to the 1990s. In 2007 the Muro das Memorias project put him in the press for the first time; the studio's own project page dates the idea to 2002. His first mural outside Brazil was in Lyon in 2011, and O Beijo, an eleven by seventeen metre reworking of Alfred Eisenstaedt's 1945 photograph on a wall above the High Line in New York, followed in 2012 and was painted over by the building's owner in early 2016, as the High Line's own statement recorded.

Three things in the standard account do not hold still. The first is his birth year: the studio, Eden House of Art, the Sao Paulo press and a 2024 press release all say 1975, while Palazzo Blu in Pisa and Artnet say 1976; this page follows the studio. The second is the size of Etnias: the studio's Cacau page calls it 2,500 square metres, its Etnias page 3,000, Agencia Brasil 'almost 3,000', Poder360 2,787 and Guinness gave the dimensions as 51 feet by 560 feet rather than an area. The third is the count of works: GGA Gallery and the Historic Hampton House say more than 500 works on five continents, Eden House of Art says more than 5,000 murals, O Globo counted 57 murals in the United States in December 2025, eight of them in Miami, and the artist himself said that he does not know where every mural is. None of these is a catalogue; the only catalogue is the one the studio says it is compiling for a 2027 retrospective.

Every large Kobra begins with a photograph of a face. For the Niemeyer wall the source was a portrait by the photographer Nana Moraes, and the artist said in 2026 that she authorised its use; O Beijo reworked Eisenstaedt, The Braves of 9/11 reworked a Matthew McDermott photograph of a firefighter, and the Paulista workers' panels of 2022 combined photographs of named Sao Paulo workers with visual quotations of works by Magritte, Michelangelo, Millet, Tarsila, Di Cavalcanti, Portinari and Warhol. On the wall the process is the one Guinness described for Etnias: the building is primed white, a grid is drawn to lay out the design, and the image is sprayed in over the grid. The likeness is realist and the colour is not: the face and clothing are broken into triangles and lozenges of saturated colour, the signature the studio calls its calling card. Kobra names Eric Grohe, the Mexican muralists and Diego Rivera, Keith Haring and Banksy as the artists he learned from by looking, and describes himself as self-taught.

The quantities are documented because the records required them. Etnias took more than 3,000 spray cans, about 100 eighteen-litre drums of acrylic latex and 150 cans of 3.6 litres of synthetic enamel in the Agencia Brasil count, or 2,800 cans and 180 buckets of acrylic in the Guinness count, seven hydraulic lifts, a team of about ten and 45 days of painting. The Cacau Show wall took 700 hours, 2,000 cans and 1,400 litres of acrylic applied with spray guns. The Luiz Gonzaga panel in Recife, 77 metres high and 8.20 wide on the side of the city hall tower, had already taken 30 days at ten hours a day when the mayor launched it on 12 March 2015 with the finish due the following month, and was to use between 800 and 1,000 cans plus more than 200 gallons of enamel. The Niemeyer wall was painted between 14 and 24 January 2013 by Kobra and four artists of Studio Kobra; the Coexistencia mural took 20 days behind hoardings during the pandemic; the 35 by 7 metre wall for the public prosecutor's office in Porto Velho was painted in five days in November 2023 by Kobra and his assistant Agnaldo Brito. He also made anamorphic pavement paintings from 2009, including the first in Brazil at Praca do Patriarca at the city's invitation.

The canvases invert the ratio of effort. The artist said in December 2025 that a one square metre canvas takes him longer than a building gable, because on the wall the realist forms, light and shadow come quickly while on canvas every face and hand has to be worked in detail. The studio lists the canvases as mixed media on canvas at between 125 and 315 centimetres a side.

A Kobra mural is a site before it is an object, and the sites are being lost at a rate the studio itself documents. Its Sao Paulo pages, read in September 2026, list twelve erased murals, among them three Muro das Memorias walls of 2009 and 2012, two Greenpincel panels of 2011, Chico e Ariano of 2014, Welcome to Brazil of 2014, the Einstein cycling mural Genial e Andar de Bike of 2015, Tom Ze and A Arte do Gol of 2016 and Bailarina Jeronimo of 2021; nineteen murals it says need restoration, including the Niemeyer of 2013, O Condicionado of 2015 and Clube 27 of 2018; and twenty-five it still recommends. The causes are the ordinary ones and the political one. Jornal Sao Paulo Zona Sul reported on 27 January 2017 that the city's Cidade Linda operation had painted the murals along Avenida 23 de Maio grey, that rain then faded the grey in several stretches, that protest tags appeared along the corridor hours later and that the Kobra panel of old Sao Paulo, which had been spared, was tagged on the city's anniversary in what the paper called a clear criticism of the mayor's action; Sao Paulo para Curiosos wrote in 2020 that the city erased a Kobra mural on the avenue in that operation, that the shoe retailer Schutz painted over the Einstein mural on Rua Oscar Freire in 2018 and explained that it wanted to present new street artists temporarily and that Prevent Senior covered Chico e Ariano in Pinheiros behind a metal facade and stated that the mural was preserved beneath it.

Weather does the rest. Diario do Rio reported on 1 February 2026 that the five faces of Etnias are still legible but the colour has gone under ten years of sun, rain, wind and salt from Guanabara Bay, that the building belongs to PortosRio and is leased to Pier Maua, that the city has no project for the site and that Kobra told O Globo the work needs not a retouch but a complete reconstruction repeating the original process. The Niemeyer wall had faded and been scarred by a facade safety survey by February 2022, when Adnews reported that it had been paid for with donations and that the artist was asking for help with the cost; it was repainted in January 2026 for the city's 472nd anniversary with almost 80 litres of surface preparation, Coralit enamels and an elastomeric Sol e Chuva coating supplied by Coral, the AkzoNobel brand, under the studio's Arte de Restaurar project, which began in December 2020 with the Ayrton Senna wall on Rua da Consolacao.

The conservation questions a buyer or a commissioning body should ask follow from this. Kobra has said in his own words that a mural's life depends on climate, pollution and whether the wall is new or old and that better wall preparation, a sealer, an acrylic base and a final varnish now let murals last longer; the studio's restoration page adds lighting and protective varnish to the list of what it seeks sponsors for. A repainted mural is a new layer of paint by the same hand on the same wall, which is a different thing from a conserved painting, and the artist's own word for the Etnias plan is reconstruction.

Kobra said in December 2025 that every public work has an original on canvas, made to test colour, light and shadow, that he has made such canvases for about twenty years, that most were bought by collectors and that he is now working on them in his studio at Itu, in the interior of Sao Paulo state, alongside works on cardboard. The studio's Telas page lists ten of them with medium and dimensions, all mixed media on canvas, from Lady Diana of 2019 at 190 by 125 centimetres to Mandela of 2019 at 175 by 315 and Hamlet II of 2020 at 196 by 285. Canvases leave the studio by direct sale from the atelier, through galleries and by charity auction, the proceeds of which go to Instituto Kobra, founded in February 2021 and, in the artist's own words, led by him with his wife.

The editions are documented case by case rather than by a published policy. A Mao de Deus was issued in 2023 as a fine-art pigment print on velvet paper, 50 by 70 centimetres, from a 33 by 7 metre mural; in May 2024 Instituto Kobra sold an edition of 500 prints of Resiliencia at 5,000 reais each; in 2020 a serigraph of Coexistencia was raffled among donors. One work is unique in a different sense: Respirar, a disused 1.30 metre oxygen cylinder painted as a transparent vessel with a tree inside, was acquired in 2021 for 700,000 reais by the UniaoBR movement through shares held by six families, and the money built two oxygen plants for the Amazonas state health department. In July 2023 the Supremo Tribunal Federal accepted a fine-art print on canvas, Constituicao, 20 by 100 centimetres, into its art collection.

What is not published is the paperwork. No certificate of authenticity practice, inventory numbering or archive policy for canvases and prints could be found on the studio site or in the press, and the studio's own shop link returned a not-found page when checked on 16 September 2026. Enquiries go to a management company's address given on every page of the site. The artist said the cataloguing of more than three thousand photographs is under way for the 2027 retrospective; until it is published, the chain from the studio for a canvas rests on the gallery invoice and the artist's word.

The walls were paid for by cities, ministries, companies and donors, and the paper trail says who. Etnias was painted at the invitation of the city of Rio, which also invited other artists to paint the port district for the 2016 Games, and was delivered as a cultural legacy, inaugurated at the end of July 2016: the city's monuments registry gives 30 July, the advance reports had said 4 August, the day the Olympic torch arrived. The Luiz Gonzaga panel in Recife was an initiative of the federal Ministry of Tourism with the city under its PartiuBrasil campaign, launched by the mayor Geraldo Julio on the city's 478th anniversary, 12 March 2015, with the words that Gonzaga was now officially embedded in the building of the municipal administration. The Niemeyer wall of 2013 was supported by Urbe Andaimes, the Galeria de Arte Andre, the Hotel Ramada and the Edificio Ragi itself, which bought all the paint; the 2026 repaint was supplied by Coral. The Cacau Show wall was a corporate commission at the company's headquarters; the 2016 book Kobra was sponsored by Tivit; Perrier commissioned a painted Renault 5 for its Inspired by Street Art campaign and sent it to Artcurial for charity in 2015.

Institutions invited him too. The United Nations hung his works in the lobby of its New York headquarters from 24 August to 9 September 2022 and displayed a 14 by 24 metre mural, a father handing the planet to his daughter, from 16 September to 16 December 2022. The public prosecutor's office of Rondonia inaugurated Brasileiras e Brasileiros on its headquarters in Porto Velho on 27 November 2023. The Historic Hampton House in Miami commissioned murals facing the house for Miami Art Week 2023. San Marino invited him to paint a 1,300 square metre mural of its history and put the image on a stamp, and in 2017 he painted his Davi, twelve by twenty metres, directly on to the marble at a thousand metres in a Carrara quarry, the quarries the studio notes were Michelangelo's. In February 2025 the press reported a second-largest-ever mural planned for Curitiba on the theme of bread.

The political reading is in the record without needing to be argued. A city hall in Recife put a folk musician's face on its own tower; the Sao Paulo city council gave Kobra its Medalha Anchieta and Diploma of Gratitude on 24 May 2016, the council president saying that the most modern and advanced culture comes from the periphery; eight months later the next Sao Paulo administration greyed the walls of Avenida 23 de Maio and Kobra's panel there was tagged, in what Jornal Sao Paulo Zona Sul read as a protest in reply.

His first solo gallery exhibition, as the gallery announced it, was Kobra: Larger Than Life at GGA Gallery inside the Wynwood Walls in Miami, opened on 1 April 2019 with more than thirty canvases and reported at the time to have almost sold out before the doors opened; a second selection, Larger Than Life Part II, with 27 works, followed in October 2019. The Exposicao da Paulista of May 2022, a trade-union initiative, put thirty of his panels of named workers along a kilometre of the Avenida Paulista cycle lane. Palazzo Blu in Pisa gave him its Sala della Biblioteca from 27 October 2023 to 14 January 2024 for a contemporary School of Athens of eight new canvases answering the avant-garde works lent from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, within the Festival della Strada; the Historic Hampton House Museum of Culture and Art in Miami showed thirteen of his canvases, the Black Lives group, in Gimme Shelter from 9 December 2023 to 22 January 2024. Since 24 February 2024 one of his ateliers has been open to the public inside FAMA Museu in Itu, a private museum, and a gallery-run space named Hall of Kobra opened on Fifth Avenue in New York at the end of November 2023. He is preparing a travelling survey of more than three decades of work, to open in 2027 in Rio, Sao Paulo and Curitiba and then abroad.

What the record does not contain is as important. No museum acquisition of a Kobra work was found; the one public collection holding documented is the art collection of the Supremo Tribunal Federal, which is a court. No biennale participation was found, and Artnet's unsourced note that he received honours from the Sao Paulo Biennial could not be verified anywhere and is not repeated here as fact. The museum presence to date is a dedicated room inside a festival, a group show at a historic house and an open studio.

The secondary market for Kobra barely exists in the databases. Artnet's price database, read in a browser on 16 September 2026, lists five lots in total: a painted Renault 5 TL, 352 by 152 by 140 centimetres, sold on 4 February 2015; Mulheres of 2010, spray on canvas, 100 by 150 centimetres, and Candido Portinari of 2012, spray on canvas, 135 by 135 centimetres, both sold on 28 November 2016; Nativos of 2021, spray and acrylic on canvas, 105 by 130 centimetres, sold on 17 February 2022; and an untitled acrylic on canvas of 150 by 250 centimetres sold on 9 June 2022. The houses, estimates and prices are behind Artnet's paywall and were not obtained. Invaluable lists no past lots and Bonhams none. The 2015 car was one of three Perrier Renault 5s painted by Kobra, Sasu and JonOne and offered at Artcurial's Urban Art sale in Paris for the French Red Cross and the Fondation Abbe Pierre, with a starting price the press gave as 5,000 euros; the result was not found in a public source. Proarte Galeria in Sao Paulo included Kobra in its October 2015 auction alongside Portinari and Volpi.

The documented prices are primary and charitable, in reais and dollars. Ao Libano com Carinho raised 50,000 US dollars for Beirut in 2020; the Coexistencia serigraph raffle raised 450,000 reais for food kits in 2020 (the release gives both 20,000 and 16,620); Respirar was bought for 700,000 reais in 2021; Resiliencia, 240 by 195 centimetres, was valued at 250,000 reais and stood at a bid of 300,000 reais on 20 and 21 May 2024; CNN Brasil reported on 24 May that it was bought by Pedro Bartelle, who runs Vulcabras, and Claudia Bartelle; the institute's own release said the campaign around it raised more than 1.5 million reais in five days including the 500 prints at 5,000 reais and Pix donations; two prints of A Mao de Deus were sold at a Gerando Falcoes dinner in Miami in December 2024 at prices not published. GGA Gallery reported the 2019 debut nearly sold out before opening, and O Globo reported in December 2025 that he sold sixteen canvases in Miami during Art Basel week, through Eden, which represents him; Eden publishes no prices. No hammer price for a Kobra canvas at an ordinary auction has been found, and the figures above should be read as what a charity room and a primary gallery have paid, not as a secondary-market level.

The studio confirms the work. There is no catalogue raisonne, no foundation and no published authentication board; the artist, Studio Kobra in Sao Paulo and the Itu atelier, Instituto Kobra and the management company named on the site are the only bodies that speak for the work, and the studio's public lists of surviving, deteriorating and erased murals are the nearest thing to an inventory in the open. No case of a fake, a disputed attribution or litigation involving Kobra was found in the Brazilian, French or American press searched for this page.

The diligence questions are therefore different from the usual ones. For a canvas, the questions are whether it is the studio's original study for a named wall, what the gallery invoice records and whether the edition size of any print is stated on the print. For a mural, the questions are whether the wall still carries the 2013 paint or the 2026 paint, who owns the wall and whether the source photograph was licensed: Kobra has said that Nana Moraes authorised the Niemeyer portrait, and several of his best-known walls reproduce photographs by Eisenstaedt and McDermott and works by artists whose copyright has not expired, so the rights chain behind an image is a live question for any reproduction or canvas derived from it.

There is one monograph, and it is the studio's. Kobra, published by Arte Ensaio with texts by Celso de Campos Jr., cover photograph by Jose M. Longo and sponsorship from Tivit, 208 pages, dated 2016 and launched on 27 June 2017 at the Livraria Cultura on Avenida Paulista, catalogues murals made in Brazil and abroad between 2013 and 2016; the launch notice quoted the artist that it was not an autobiography but a look at his recent trajectory. A children's book, O Menino e o Muro, written by Katya Manira and illustrated by Kobra, was published by Ciranda Cultural in July 2023. Beyond that the literature is journalism and the institutions' own texts: Vitruvius in 2013, the Guinness citations of 2016 and 2017, Palazzo Blu's exhibition text of 2023 and the interviews cited here. No scholarly monograph, museum catalogue or sustained critical essay on the work was found.

Kobra's subjects are a declared programme, and the documentation is his own. Olhares da Paz, the series he began before Rio, portrays people he presents as having fought violence with a culture of peace: Gandhi, Anne Frank, Malala Yousafzai, Einstein, Mandela, Martin Luther King, the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa are the names the studio's biography and its Olhares da Paz page list. Greenpincel, from 2011, is a set of protest panels pairing an image with a slogan against predatory fishing, rodeo, deforestation, warming and pollution. Etnias took the five Olympic rings as five peoples, the Huli of New Guinea, the Mursi of Ethiopia, the Kayin of Thailand, the Supi of Europe and the Tapajos of the Americas, and the artist told the press he wanted to show that everyone is connected. The UN mural of 2022 puts the Amazon at the centre of a planet handed from father to daughter, because, he said, the forest must be one of the world's concerns.

The religious language is explicit and ecumenical. Coexistencia, first painted on canvas in 2020 and then on a 28 by 7 metre wall lent by the Paroquia Sao Paulo da Cruz, shows five children in masks, one each for Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism and Hinduism; its inauguration on 6 May 2021 was attended by Cardinal Odilo Scherer, the rabbi Michel Schlesinger, the sheikh Jihad Hammadeh, the Zen monk Ryozan, Sri Prem Baba, the Lutheran pastor Gustavo Schmitt and two Candomble priests, and the artist's own statement of the work is that God gave humanity both art and science, so there is no contradiction between faith and following the specialists on Covid-19. A box for letters to God stands beside the wall, and the parish's plaque names it a Memorial da Fe for all the victims of the pandemic. The studio's account of the Anne Frank wall in Amsterdam in 2016 says the city, the NDSM neighbourhood committee, the Anne Frank House and the Street Art Museum that had invited him all preferred Spinoza as a subject, citing fear of religious protest and the protection of Anne's image, and that he painted Anne Frank anyway. For the regional series he began in Coxim in 2020 he quotes Tolstoy on the universal being the man who writes about his own village. All of this is stated intention, documented in his words; there is no esoteric layer to find, and saying so is the finding.

The disagreements on the record are about numbers and about what counts as the same work. The area of Etnias has at least five published values; Guinness measured the Cacau Show wall at 5,728.62 square metres while the studio and the press say 5,742; the birth year is 1975 or 1976 depending on the institution; the count of works runs from 500 to 5,000 depending on who is selling. The studio's own Coexistencia project page gives the wall's address as Av. Dr. Eneas Carvalho de Aguiar, while the parish, the press and the photographs place it at the corner of Rua Henrique Schaumann and Rua Cardeal Arcoverde. Whether the Niemeyer wall repainted in 2026 is the mural of 2013 or a second execution of the same design is a question the artist's own vocabulary of reconstruction leaves open, and the same question awaits Etnias.

Unknown, rather than disputed, are the hammer prices of the five Artnet lots, the terms on which canvases and prints leave the studio, the ownership of the copyright in the source photographs behind each wall and the present state of most of the murals outside Sao Paulo, which the studio says it is establishing.
