# Fabricated Provenance: The Forger's Real Craft

> The successful forgers of the last forty years were rarely the best painters. They were the best archivists, and the paperwork is where they are caught.

## Key points

- John Drewe's method was not document forgery but archive infiltration: he inserted and substituted records inside the institutions a buyer would use to check them.
- The Nazi era is the forger's preferred address because it is the one period in which missing documentation is expected rather than suspicious.
- Fabricated papers usually fail on an internal anachronism, as with the Getty kouros letter dated 1952 that carries a postal code introduced in 1972.
- Ely Sakhai's scheme inverted the problem entirely: the certificates were genuine and the paintings were not, which no examination of the paperwork could have caught.

## The picture must survive the second look; the paperwork must survive the first

## Drewe did not forge documents; he forged archives

## The 1933 to 1945 gap is the forger's preferred address

## The document betrays itself before the picture does

## The hardest case: when the certificate is genuine

The trade still discusses forgery as a contest of hands, and prices technical examination accordingly. The convictions say otherwise. Drewe took the money while Myatt did the painting; Beltracchi was undone by a pigment only after a buyer paid for analysis years later; the Getty kouros provenance died on a postal code while the sculpture remains undecided. Provenance is the part of an attribution that can be checked cheaply, checked twice, and checked against a copy held somewhere the seller cannot reach. It is also the part most often taken on trust.

## Questions

**If a provenance can be confirmed in a museum archive, what more can a buyer do?**

Check a second, independently held copy of the same catalogue or record. Drewe's method depended on altering one physical copy in one institution. Duplicate holdings elsewhere, and digitised runs made before the period of infiltration, will not match an inserted page.

**Which physical features of a provenance document are worth examining?**

The incidental apparatus rather than the assertion: postal codes, telephone number formats, bank account and company registration numbers, letterhead addresses, typeface and typewriter characteristics, paper and ink dates, and the adhesive and ageing of labels. The Getty kouros papers failed on a postal code and a bank account.

**Why do forgers so often choose the Nazi period?**

Because it is the one era in which an absent record is the expected condition rather than a warning. Beltracchi's invented collections were said to have been bought from Alfred Flechtheim in 1933, which explains simultaneously why the works were cheap, why they vanished and why nothing was photographed.

**Does a matching certificate prove that this canvas is the certified work?**

No. Ely Sakhai sold copies accompanied by the genuine certificates of the originals he owned. A certificate is evidence about a work only to the extent that it records identifying particulars, such as dimensions, condition, inscriptions and collection marks, that tie it to one physical object.
